Vila Jusã is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal . Vila Jusã is located on the Rio Douro and is part of the Alto Douro wine-growing region , the first protected wine-growing region in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 .

history

The oldest records date from the 12th century, when the place was recorded under the name São Martinho de Meison Frigido de Jusano . The first official document of the place is the deed of donation of the local church São Martinho from May 19, 1145 by Portugal's first King D. Afonso Henriques . The geographical proximity to the municipalities of Santa Cristina and São Nicolau subsequently caused many conflicts, both between the population and between the local rulers. Since the 12th century, there was a desire in Vila Jusã to be administered from Mesão Frio, but this was rejected there.

At least since the middle of the 18th century, Vila Jusã was an independent municipality.

Until the administrative reforms after the Miguelistenkrieg (1834) the place belonged to the Pena Guião district , after which it was affiliated to Mesão Frio.

With the territorial reform in 2013 , the community of Vila Jusã was dissolved and merged with the two old neighboring communities to form the new community of Mesão Frio (Santo André) .
