Santa Marta de Penaguião is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 7356 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , which has been the world's first protected wine-growing region since 1756 . It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 .
history
Finds and excavations prove a settlement of the area at least since the Castro culture . The Romans who settled here also left traces, including a kiln. In 1202 King Sancho I granted the place town rights ( Foral ), which King Manuel I renewed in 1519.
Culture and sights
The architectural monuments include various historical public buildings, stone fountains and sacred buildings , including the parish church Igreja Paroquial de São Miguel de Lobrigos (also Igreja de São Miguel ), which dates back to a first church in the 15th century . The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
Various hiking trails lead past villages, miradouros , wineries, old mills and a Roman oven.
