Sabrosa is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 1202 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , the first protected wine-growing region in the world, part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2001 .
history
Various findings and excavations occupy a prehistoric colonization, such as the Dolmen from the New Stone Age or the Iron Age Castro ( Portugueso. For Wallburg ). The following Romans also settled here, as evidenced by finds of coins or Roman- Lusitan burial sites. Sabrosa received its first town charter ( Foral ) in the independent Kingdom of Portugal in 1196 . The independent Sabrosa district was created in 1836 by splitting off from the Vila Real district.
Culture and sights
The local monuments include various historical public buildings, historical residential houses, fountains and sacred buildings , including the late Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Sabrosa (also Igreja de São Salvador ), which u. a. Altar retable made of gilded wood ( Talha dourada ) conceals. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
In addition to the municipal event center Auditório and the municipal library Biblioteca Municipal , the cultural center Espaço Miguel Torga designed by Souto Moura is another cultural focus of the place, which is dedicated to the work and life of the writer, but also to art with exhibitions and events.
Various thematically sorted hiking trails are laid out in a circle, which are dedicated to history and archeology or viticulture.
Archaeological finds in a circle
- The Castelo dos Mouros ( Portuguese for Castle of the Moors , there are six other structures with this name on the Iberian Peninsula), about 2 km from the town, was superficially exposed from 1968. The local facility from pre-Roman times has so far hardly produced any finds.
- The Roman-Lusitanian cemetery Cemitério lusitano-romano by Quinta da Relva
- The 6000 year old Mamoa das Madorras .
- The Iron Age hill fort Castro de Sabrosa , which was expanded into a fortress by the Romans
- The medieval excavations of Touças , especially the rock tombs from the 5th century AD.
