Emanuel (born March 25, 1957 in Covas do Douro ; real name Américo Pinto da Silva Monteiro ) is a hit pop singer from Portugal .

Life

He was born as the first of four brothers in a small town in the Alto Douro region, the first protected wine-growing region in the world (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site ). From the age of ten he lived in the greater Lisbon area , where he learned classical guitar in 1973 . After he then gave music lessons, engaged in various musical activities and released his first album with instrumental music, he founded his own recording studio in 1986 , where he produced light music by artists such as José Malhoa and Cândida Branca Flor .

After singing at the Festival da Canção in 1991 , the Portuguese preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), he recorded his first album as a singer in 1992 with Tu Sabes Que Já Foste Minha . Since then he has performed regularly in Portugal and occasionally abroad, particularly at events organized by Portuguese communities abroad. He has also released a new album every year since then. His most successful work is Pimba, Pimba from 1995, with half a million copies sold. He also continued to write pieces for other musicians, including the music for the 2007 Portuguese ESC contribution by singer Sabrina , on whose text he also contributed.

Later he increasingly turned to the African styles Kuduro and Kizomba, which were popular in Portugal and originated in Angola . The most successful album from this phase was Ritmo do Amor , which reached second place in the Portuguese sales charts in 2011.

Emanuel was Rei do Carnaval ("Carnival King") of the Carnaval de Buarcos 2014 , the nationally known carnival parade in the seaside resort of Buarcos (Figueira da Foz). "Carnival Queen" 2014 was by his side the singer Suzy . She represented Portugal at the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest with the piece Quero ser tua , which Emanuel had written for her.
