Alijó is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 2635 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). Alijó belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , the first protected wine-growing region in the world since 1756, which has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2001 .

history

A whole series of excavations and finds prove a long prehistoric settlement of the district area. With the emergence of the Reconquista in the 8th century, the place presumably existing in pre- Arab times was already documented as an independent municipality.

King D.Sancho II had the place repopulated in 1225 and gave it first city rights in 1226, which King D Afonso III. Confirmed in 1269 with full town charter ( Foral ). King Manuel I renewed the town charter in 1514.

A large number of mansions , stone fountains, former public buildings and sacred buildings are listed in the district. The historic center of Alijó as a whole is also protected.

Alijó is located in the Douro Valley and belongs to the first protected wine-growing region in the world, the Alto Douro , which was established in 1756 . It is part of the official UNESCO World Heritage . Hiking trails have been laid out and there are a number of tourist offers, especially rural tourism .

Alijó is the seat of a district of the same name. The neighboring areas are (starting clockwise in the north): Vila Pouca de Aguiar , Murça , Carrazeda de Ansiães , São João da Pesqueira and Sabrosa .

With the regional reform in September 2013, several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 19 to 14.
