Favaios is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Alijó . It has 1064 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The traces of human settlement in the area lead back to the Iron Age . The Castro culture lasted until the Romans took the area . Favaios, then known as Flávias , was on a Roman road and was part of the administrative area of ​​Panoias. At the beginning of the 8th century the Moors conquered the area. They razed the fortifications of Flávias and the residents subsequently left the place. Only in the course of the Reconquista did people settle here again. The following Suebs set up the community of Sanct Georgios de Fabaios . The current name Favaios developed from Fabaios.

In 1211 the place received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time , by King Alfonso II , which in 1270 by Alfonso III. have been confirmed. In 1853 the previously independent circle of Favaios was dissolved and Alijó was incorporated.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the place are u. a. various stone fountains, sacred buildings and former public buildings. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
