Vila Pouca de Aguiar is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( Concelho ) in Portugal with 3303 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Archaeological excavations and finds of megalithic systems prove the prehistoric settlement. The Romans settled here because of the ore deposits, especially gold, but they also mined lead and silver here. After the invasion of Germanic tribes, Visigoths settled here , who were driven out by the Moors from the early 8th century .
In the course of the Reconquista and the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1139, the Aguiar da Pena district was formed, to which Vila Pouca de Aguiar belonged. The name was probably derived from the Roman town of Cauca , to which the appendix de Aguiar was added to delimit it, as belonging to Aguiar da Pena.
King Manuel I renewed the city rights ( Foral ) of Aguiar da Pena in 1515 , to whose district Vila Pouca de Aguiar still belonged. The district was dissolved in the course of the administrative reforms of 1836–1855, and independent districts were newly formed. The Vila Pouca de Aguiar, which had recently become independent, was also significantly expanded.
Culture and sights
Various archaeological excavations can be visited in the district, including the Roman gold mine of Trêsminas , and megalithic sites , here called Antas and Mámoas . The ruins of the medieval castle ( Castelo de Pena de Aguiar ), which the Visigoths built in the 9th century on the remains of a hill fort of the Castro culture , can also be visited, a visitor center has been set up there.
The local monuments include historical public buildings, the two modernist cinemas, a stone fountain, and various sacred buildings , including the Mannerist - Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Vila Pouca de Aguiar (also Igreja do Cemitério ), which was built in 1704 . a. Altar retable made of gilded wood ( Talha dourada ) conceals. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
The Pedras Salgadas thermal baths are located in the municipality of Bornes de Aguiar , and their mineral water is sold nationally and internationally.
