Pedras Salgadas (German: salty stones) is a small town ( Vila ) in the municipality of Bornes de Aguiar , in the northern Portuguese district of Vila Pouca de Aguiar .

The Romans who settled here and who installed a water supply system for their mines (including in Trêsminas ) recognized and used the healing powers of the thermal springs. There have been reports of the medicinal use of the local water since the 11th century.

In 1871 , the doctor Júlio Rodrigues officially confirmed the healing properties of the water, and it received an award at the 1873 World Exhibition in Vienna. In 1874 the company Companhia Águas de Pedras Salgadas was founded , which from then on sold the water. With the completion of the industrial bottling plants in 1893 , the commercialization of mineral water expanded significantly, which received a large number of awards and thus made a significant contribution to the popularity of the place.

The thermal baths opened regularly in 1879 . It subsequently developed into a well-known health resort in Portugal. Special development stations were the king of the extended-stay Manuel II. In 1906 , the connection to the railway line corgo line in 1907 , and the opening of the casino in 1910 , which, however, no gambling - concession was awarded.

In 1999 the place was raised to a Vila (small town).

In the course of the privatizations and mergers that have also taken place in the thermal baths area in Portugal since the 1990s, the sources changed hands several times. Today you belong to the Unicer Group. In 2009 the thermal bath was reopened as Pedras Salgadas Spa & Nature Park , u. a. with the Spa Termal by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira , and the seven ecological guest houses ( Eco houses ) by the architect Luís Rebelo de Andrade , which have received international awards.

Culture and sights

The thermal bath and its facilities and parks are the main attraction for visitors.

The church of Capela de Pedras Salgadas (also Capela de São Martinho ) from the 19th century is a listed building, as is the historic building of the primary school and the town's train station, which opened in 1907.

economy

Tourism is of major importance for the place, due to the thermal springs. The mineral water of the same name bottled here is sold nationally and internationally. Today it is considered the most famous mineral water in Portugal.
