history

The prehistory to 1974

Companhia União Fabril Portuense das Fábricas de Cerveja e Bebidas Refrigerantes (CUFP) was founded in Porto in 1890 , through the merger of six small breweries in the city ( Fábrica da Piedade , Fábrica do Mello , M. Achevk & Cia. , JJ Chentrino & Cia. , JJ Persival & Cia. And M. Schereck ) and a brewery in Ponte da Barca . The Cristal was the brewery's most important new brand. However, the new company was only able to overcome the existing problems slowly, which made it difficult to develop a quality beer due to the difficult procurement of high-quality ingredients and modern know-how .

In 1900 the company hired a German master brewer for a monthly wage of 350 marks and a profit share of one real per liter of beer sold above the limit of 300,000 liters. In addition, investments were made in modern facilities and selected suppliers. With the award at the industrial exhibition in the Palácio de Cristal in Porto in 1926, international standards were achieved. In 1927, the CUFP launched the new Super Bock brand , but continued to produce Cristal and other beers.

After breweries from Lisbon and Coimbra had also been selling their brands in northern Portugal since 1926, the CUFP expanded its activities in the south of the country from the 1930s onwards. During the Second World War , the CUFP also introduced the Nevália brand in order not to endanger its main brands Super Bock, Cristal and Zirta, as it was now difficult to source high-quality ingredients. In addition, the CUFP was able to find large sales with the Allied troops in Gibraltar with the Vitória brand .

In 1947, the CUFP, together with the Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas, SA (SCC) , founded the Cuca brewery in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola . Cuca , Angola's most popular beer to this day, achieved enormous growth rates there, also as a result of the economic growth in Angola.

In addition to Cristal and Super Bock , CUFP also managed the brands Invicta Negra , Invicta Cola , Além-Mar (marketed in the colonies) and Zirta , all of which were produced in the 1960s at the newly built brewing center in Leça do Balio near Porto.

Since it was founded in 1977

With the Carnation Revolution in 1974, economic policy in the country also changed, as a result of which the government nationalized the largest breweries in the country. On June 1, 1977, the state-owned UNICER ( União Cervejeira, EP - "Beer Union, Public Company") was created as a merger of the breweries CUFP, COPEJA (from Santarém), IMPERIAL (from Loulé) and the soft drinks manufacturer RICAL from Sta. Iria da Azóia. The headquarters of the company were the facilities of the CUFP in Leça do Balio.

In the same year 1977, two Unicer beers received international awards, Cristal and Super Bock , each with a gold medal at the Monde Selection de la Qualité in Luxembourg. Since 1978 Unicer has also been producing Tuborg beer for the Portuguese market under license .

From 1982 onwards, Unicer expanded the marketing of Cristal beer from northern Portugal to the whole country and at the same time gave up the production of the Clok and Marina brands . In 1986 Unicer became the Portuguese market leader for the first time with a share of 50.8%.

After Portugal joined the EU in 1986, the company was first privatized in 1988. It was converted into a Portuguese joint-stock company, Unicer SA In 1989 49% of the shares on the Porto stock exchange were sold. In 1990 the state finally gave the remaining 51% to private customers via the stock exchange.

Because it no longer only sold beer and the name brewery led to misunderstandings, its name was changed from Unicer - União Cervejeira EP to Unicer - Bebidas de Portugal, SA on January 1, 2001 .

Since then Unicer has expanded its exports in particular. The company is present in over 30 countries and is a. Market leader in Angola. In 2012 Unicer was already exporting over 40% of its brewery products.
