history

In the area around the place, especially in Custóias there by discovered dolmens evidence of colonization of the area during the Neolithic period before about 5000 years ago, and an Iron Age settlement near the village of Sao Sebastiao. Finds from the 1st century attest to the Roman Villa Decio, from which the name Leça can be derived, and a Iuppiter temple , where the Mosteiro de Leça do Balio (English Monastery of Leça do Balio) is today.

In 1999 the place was renamed from Leça do Bailio to Leça do Balio and on June 30 of the same year raised to a small town ( Vila ).

On September 29, 2013, the municipality of Leça do Balio merged with the municipalities of Custóias and Guifões to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Custóias, Leça do Balio e Guifões as part of the regional reform in Portugal .
