Manuel da Silva Martins (born January 20, 1927 in Leça do Balio , † September 24, 2017 in Maia ) was a Portuguese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Setúbal .

Life

Manuel da Silva Martins studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in Porto and was ordained a priest on August 12, 1951 . After studying for a doctorate at the Gregorian in Rome, he was Professor of Canon Law at the Major Seminary in Porto, later its Vice-Rector. He was Vicar General in Porto from 1969 to 1975.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 16, 1975 as the first bishop of the diocese of Setúbal established on the same date . The Bishop of Porto , António Ferreira Gomes , donated him episcopal ordination on October 26th of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Domingos de Pinho Brandão , auxiliary bishop in Porto, and António Baltasar Marcelino , auxiliary bishop in Lisbon . On April 23, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation.

Manuel da Silva Martins was President of the Episcopal Commission for Social and Charitable Action and President of the Episcopal Commission for Migration and Tourism. He was also active as president of the Portuguese section of Pax Christi and the Fundação SPES .

His sermons were published; he was extremely present on radio, television and the press. He condemned the hunger in the world and the unemployment of many people in his diocese. He condemned the inhumane humiliation of gypsies and migrants, as well as the poor and homeless.

He became an honorary citizen of several cities and municipalities in Portugal. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lusíada . In 2015 Martins was awarded the Medal of the Ordem de Timor-Leste .
