Maia is a city in northern Portugal . With the municipality of the same name and the districts of Gueifães and Vermoim, the city has around 40,000 inhabitants (as of 2015) . There is an Arp Schnitger organ in the cathedral of Maia .
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, especially in the Paleolithic and Iron Age . Thanks to the fertile soil and its water resources, the Romans also settled here.
The present place was created during the Reconquista . As Terra da Maia was the area in the 13th century, a separate administrative district, located between Porto and left Ave -Ufer. In 1304 it became part of the Porto district, and in 1360 King D. Pedro subordinated it to his son, Prince D. Dinis .
In 1519 King D. Manuel I. granted Maia the first city rights and made it again the seat of a district. Between 1700 and 1836, 44 parishes belonged to the district, which thus included the coastal area between the rivers Leça and Ave. In 1809 the French army marched towards Porto through Maia in connection with the Napoleonic invasions .
In the course of the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Maia district was dissolved after it had frequently been the scene of civil war battles between liberal and absolutist troops in the Miguelistenkrieg from 1832 to 1834 . As part of the administrative reforms of the Mouzinho da Silveira , the district was then restored in 1836, but with a significantly smaller area. After it was dissolved again in 1857, the district has been independent since 1868. In 1902 Maia was elevated to a small town ( Vila ). After the Portuguese Republic was proclaimed in 1910, the philosopher Leonardo Coimbra temporarily ruled the place. On August 23, 1986, Maia was elevated to a city ( Cidade ).
