Fernando Teixeira dos Santos (born September 13, 1951 in Moreira near Porto , Portugal ), mostly just Teixeira dos Santos in the Portuguese media , is a Portuguese Socialist Party politician and was finance minister in the Sócrates government from 2005 to June 20, 2011 .

Life

Fernando Teixeira dos Santos grew up in the Moreira community in the Maia district near Porto . He completed his school education at the Liceu Normal de D. Manuel II in Porto. In 1973 he graduated from the University of Porto with a degree in economics . In the following years he worked primarily as an assistant at the University of Porto until he received his doctorate there in 1986. He had previously completed his PhD in 1985 at the University of South Carolina with a dissertation entitled "Essays on Portuguese Monetary Economics". Until 1995 he continued to teach economics in Porto.

In 1995 he was appointed State Secretary by the Portuguese Finance Minister António Sousa Franco under the government of the socialist Guterres . Between 2000 and 2005, Teixeira dos Santos headed the Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários , the Portuguese stock exchange regulator.

In 2005, Prime Minister José Sócrates, newly elected in the same year , appointed Fernando Teixeira dos Santos as the new finance minister and one of the three ministers of state. His predecessor, Luís Campos e Cunha , who had only been in office for a good four months, resigned for family reasons. As finance minister, Teixeira dos Santos, alongside Prime Minister Sócrates and Foreign Minister Amado, is often the focus of Portuguese reporting due to Portugal's economic situation. In 2007, during Portugal's EU Council Presidency , he headed the EU finance ministers' round.

Teixeira dos Santos has received various awards and prizes, including the Grand Order of Infante D. Henrique ( Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique ) in 2005 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina in May 1998 .

Fernando Teixeira dos Santos is married and has two children.
