Jaime Silva (politician)
Jaime de Jesus Lopes Silva (born February 21, 1954 in Almeida ) is a Portuguese politician of the Socialist Party (PS) and since 2005 Minister of Agriculture in the Sócrates I cabinet .
Life
He graduated in economics at the Higher Institute of Economics and Management ( Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão of) Technical University of Lisbon with the usual Lizenziatur ( Licenciatura ) from.
Shortly after completing his studies, he joined the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture ( Ministério da Agricultura ), where he carried out a wide variety of tasks. Among other things, he was one of the most important negotiators in the development of the common European agricultural policy . He was also chairman of the food industry department in the European Commission's Directorate-General for Economy and Industry.
Between 2001 and 2002 Jaime Silva was the main advisor in the permanent representation of Portugal to the European Union in Brussels. After the early parliamentary elections in February 2005 , in which the Portuguese Socialists won an absolute majority for the first time, Prime Minister-designate José Sócrates appointed Silva as the new Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries.
