José António de Melo Pinto Ribeiro (born September 9, 1946 in Quissico , Mozambique ) is a Portuguese lawyer and politician. From 2008 to 2009 he was his country's minister of culture in the Sócrates government .

Life

Ribeiro, who initially grew up with his parents José Manuel Saldanha de Melo e Faro and Maria Benedita Sarsfield de Pinto Ribeiro in Mozambique , then lived in Porto, where he attended the German school abroad in Porto between 1952 and 1962 . He then switched to a Portuguese state school, the Liceu D. Manuel II , also in Porto; there he received the Portuguese Abitur in 1964.

He then studied law at the University of Lisbon from 1964 to 1969 ; During this time he also received the Prémio Gulbenkian as the best student of legal and economic sciences. From 1969 to 1971 he worked as a trainee lawyer with José Dias Marques, and since 1971 he has been a full member of the Portuguese Lawyers Association. From 1971 to 1980 Ribeiro lectured in commercial law at the Higher Institute of Economics ( Instituto Superior de Economia ) at the University of Lisbon. After a promotion he also headed the chair for commercial law there. During this time (1973–1975) he did his military service as a member of the Portuguese Navy. From 1987 to 1993 he also lectured at the Autonomous University of Lisbon . From 1996 to 1997 Ribeiro worked at the Higher Institute for Business and Labor Sciences ( Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa ), from 1997 to 2002 he worked at the Law Faculty of the New University of Lisbon .

Professional career

From 1974 to 1990 Ribeiro advised Banco Português do Atlântico on issues of international law and supported the bank in its expansion, including to New York, the Cayman Islands, London and Macau. At the same time, he also advised numerous other banking institutions, such as Banco Comercial Português , Banco Totta & Açores , Banco Kleinworth Benson , private banks , Banco Comercial de Macau , as well as companies such as TAP , Brisa and Soponata .

From September 1985 Ribeiro was a member of the Portuguese Bankers Association in the Legal Committee of the European Banking Federation . From 1995 to 1998 he was chairman of this committee. Ribeiro was also an expert on the Portuguese representative in the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law , which has set itself the goal of standardizing international trade law.

José António de Melo Pinto Ribeiro was and is still a member of various boards of directors of Portuguese companies, including Banco de Investimento Global , Victoria-Seguros , Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa and Portucel . He was also CEO of the subsidiary of Portugal Telecom , PT Multimédia , and the Berardo Foundation for Modern Art ( Fundação de Arte Moderna e Contemporânea-Colecção Berardo ).

After the culture minister of the Sócrates government, Isabel Pires de Lima , came under massive criticism for her cuts in the cultural sector, Prime Minister Sócrates appointed Ribeiro as the new culture minister. He took office in January 2008. Apart from his position as chairman of the Berardo Cultural Foundation, he has had relatively little to do with this department so far.

Ribeiro is a Grand Officer of the Order of Freedom ( Ordem da Liberdade ) and speaks a total of five foreign languages ​​(English, French, German, Spanish and Italian).
