Life

Ana Jorge completed her medical studies at the University of Lisbon in 1973 with the usual licenciatura and then worked from 1973 to 1975 at the Chair of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the same institution. From 1977 to 1982 she worked in conventional medicine in the health center of Caneças , a suburb of Lisbon.

From 1984 Jorge specialized primarily in pediatric and adolescent medicine, from 1984 to 1991 she worked in the children's clinic of the Dona Estefânia Hospital in Lisbon and at the same time until 1992 at the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (“National School for Public Health”) for the newcomers University of Lisbon . From 1991 she moved to the Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada , where she worked as a specialist. From 1994 to 1996 Jorge was a member of the Health Prophylaxis Commission of the Portuguese Ministries of Education and Health. After that she worked again from January to March 1996 at the Garcia de Orta Hospital. Shortly thereafter, however, Maria de Belém Roseira, Minister of Health of the Guterres government , appointed her as coordinator of the Lisbon health sub-region, a function that Jorge held between March 1996 and January 1997. Ana Jorge continued to work in a similar professional field, after coordinating the health sub-region, she headed the board of the regional health administration of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley ( Vale do Tejo ) from January 1997 to December 2000. After that, from 2001, she headed the hospital's children's clinic again Garcia de Orta; from 2003 she was represented in the ethics committee of the same institution.

Since the health minister António Correia de Campos of the Sócrates government drew more and more criticism in the course of the implementation of his reforms and austerity programs, Prime Minister Sócrates dismissed him on January 29, 2008. He appointed Ana Jorge as his successor, and she then resigned as head the children's clinic. Both the opposition and the media responded ambiguously to the cabinet reshuffle - on the one hand with astonishment that other departments were not also affected. On the other hand, it was also noted that Jorge had not supported the official candidate of the Socialist Party, Mário Soares , but the left-wing Manuel Alegre in the 2006 presidential elections , which she interpreted as a criticism of the current government. Nonetheless, it was assumed that the replacement would have no impact on health care reforms and that austerity would continue.

In 1994 Ana Jorge received the Pais e Filhos (Eng. Parents and Children ) award from the magazine of the same name. In 2002 she received the Medal of Honor from the Portuguese Ministry of Health for her services to the country.
