António Correia de Campos completed his law studies at the traditional University of Coimbra with the usual licenciatura . He then worked until 1969 as the "directeur d'Hôpital" of the École Nationale de la Santé Publique in Rennes , France. Correia de Campos obtained his Masters in Public Health (MPH) in 1978 from the School of Hygiene and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , USA. Since 1982 he has been working as an assistant professor at the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (“National School for Public Health”) of the New University of Lisbon .

His activities in further professional life can be described as diverse. From 1987 to 1991 António Correia de Campos was President of the Portuguese Association for Health Economics, and he was also a member of the science commissions of the European Conferences on Health Economics in Barcelona (1989) and Paris (1992). Between October 1992 and December 1995 he worked as a specialist for the World Bank in the field of health administration, and from 1996 to 1998 he was President of the Commission for the White Paper on Portuguese Social Insurance . Since 1997 he has been the President of the Instituto Nacional de Administração ("National Administrative Institute "). From 2001 to 2003 he was President of the Science Council at the European Institute of Public Administration in Maastricht , Netherlands.

António Correia de Campos participated in political areas even before the Carnation Revolution . From 1966 he was a technical advisor in the Ministry of Health. Shortly after the revolution, when the new constitution had not yet been adopted and the so-called Governos provisórios (Provisional Governments) ruled, the Fifth Provisional Government held the post of State Secretary for Supply. A little later, from August 1979 to January 1980, Correia de Campos was State Secretary in the Ministry of Health. From 1991 to 1992 Correia de Campos was a member of the Portuguese Parliament . António Correia de Campos held his first ministerial office in the second Guterres government from July 3, 2001 to April 6, 2002.

After the early parliamentary elections in February 2005 , in which the Portuguese Socialists won an absolute majority for the first time, Prime Minister-designate José Sócrates appointed Correia de Campos as the new Minister for Health. During his time as health minister, Correia de Campos was forced to make major cuts in the health sector due to the rigid austerity requirements. Especially his plans to close numerous emergency medical services and maternity clinics, especially in rural areas such as Trás-os-Montes , attracted numerous critics. Critics accused Correia de Campos of undermining Portugal's public health system with its numerous austerity measures. Ultimately, Prime Minister Sócrates decided in January 2008 to dismiss António Correia de Campos as minister. His successor was the director of the Almada children's clinic, Ana Jorge .

In the 2009 European elections , Correia de Campos was elected to the European Parliament as one of seven PS candidates .

António Correia de Campos has published numerous works on health administration and policy.
