Francisco Nunes Correia

Francisco Carlos da Graça Nunes Correia (born April 7, 1951 in Lisbon , Portugal ), mostly just Francisco Nunes Correia , is a Portuguese engineer and politician of the Socialist Party (PS). Since 2005 he has been Minister of the Environment in the Sócrates I cabinet .

Life

Francisco Nunes Correia was born on April 7, 1951 in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. He completed his studies in 1975 of civil engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico with the usual Lizenziatur ( Licenciatura ab). He received his " Masters of Science " in hydrology and water management from Colorado State University in 1978 ; he received his doctorate in civil engineering from the same institution in 1984 . In 1992 he was briefly academic councilor at the Technical University of Lisbon , in 1994 he was coordinating research director at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering ( Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil ). Since 1994 he has also been a member of the national water council, which was founded in the same year.

From 1991 to 1995 Correira was CFO of EPAL , Portugal's national water supplier. Between 1993 and 1995 Nunes Correia was a technical advisor to the Portuguese Ministry of the Environment. During this time he was responsible for drawing up the National Environmental Plan, among other things, and was also involved in the negotiations between Portugal and Spain on the reallocation of water resources. Up until the turn of the millennium, Correira worked primarily for the World Bank in Brazil, where it assessed projects requesting funding.

In January 2004 he was appointed President of the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, which he held until March 2005. After the early parliamentary elections in February 2005 , in which the Portuguese Socialists won an absolute majority for the first time, Prime Minister-designate José Sócrates appointed Francisco Nunes Correia as the new Minister for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development.

In his role as a researcher at various universities and institutes, Nunes Correia published numerous works. He has been married since 1978 and has two children.
