history

In the excavations at Sendim

Various finds date from the time of Roman settlement, in particular the excavations of the Villa of Sendim from the 4th century. The oldest documented mention of Felgueira comes from the year 959 . Under Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , the place probably received its first city rights, but the document has not been preserved. King D. Manuel I renewed the city charter in 1514 .

The previous small town ( Vila ) Felgueiras was elevated to a town ( Cidade ) on July 13, 1990 . At the same time, Lixa and its four municipalities were elevated to town status in the district.

Sports

Felgueiras is home to the Futebol Clube Felgueiras football club, founded in 1933 . He plays his home games of the third Portuguese division (as of 2013/14 season) in the stadium of the Zona Desportiva de Felgueiras .

Other football clubs in the district include the CRPP Barrosas ( Centro Recreativo Popular População de Barrosas ) from the municipality of Idães, founded in 1955, and FC Lixa, founded in 1934, both of which compete in the leagues of the Porto district association (as of 2013/14).
