Armindo Lopes Coelho

Armindo Lopes Coelho (born February 16, 1931 in Regilde ; † September 29, 2010 in Ermesinde ) was Bishop of Porto .

Life

Armindo Lopes Coelho was ordained a priest on August 1, 1954 . He was pastor at the Porto Cathedral . In 1959 he completed a doctorate in philosophy and theology at the Gregoriana in Rome. From 1959 to 1974 he was prefect of the seminary in Porto and professor of moral theology. He also taught religion and ethics at the Liceu Rodrigues de Freitas and was Professor of Ethics at the Institute for Social Services in Porto and Professor of Dogmatics at the Centro de Cultura Católica . In 1971 he became a member of the cathedral chapter in Porto. In 1975 he was appointed dean of the Seminário de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Seminário Maior) do Porto . In 1975 he was appointed episcopal vicar for the clergy and church renewal. In 1975 he became Pro-Vicar General of the Diocese of Porto.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Elvas on November 16, 1978 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Porto . The Bishop of Porto, António Ferreira Gomes , donated him episcopal ordination on March 25 of the next year ; Co- consecrators were Domingos de Pinho Brandão , auxiliary bishop in Porto, and Manuel da Silva Martins , bishop of Setúbal . Lopes Coelho was appointed Bishop of Viana do Castelo on October 15, 1982 and Bishop of Porto on June 13, 1997.

In October 2006 he suffered a stroke . Porto's auxiliary bishop João Miranda Teixeira then took over his duties as apostolic administrator until a successor was appointed. On February 22, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. Coelho's age-related resignation.
