history

The Romans encountered an already existing Celtic settlement called Celióbrigo or Celóbriga here. Not much is known from the following epochs of the Visigoths and Moors . During the Reconquista , the area gained some strategic importance and the castles of Celorico de Basto and Arnoias were built, some time before the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal from 1140 .

In 1520 Celorico de Basto received city rights. From the 17th century onwards, a number of mansions were built in the district, mostly by emigrants who had become wealthy in Brazil . The seat of the district was housed in a simple building at the castle Castelo de Arnoia until it was moved to the municipality of Britelo in April 1719 under the name Vila Nova de Freixieiro .
