The Linha do Tâmega is a narrow-gauge railway line in Portugal. It runs parallel to the Tâmega River and was built in 1000 mm narrow gauge . The purpose of the line was to merge the Linha do Douro with the Linha de Guimarães in Chaves and the Linha do Corgo . However, the construction of the line only reached the Arco de Baúlhe station and so this plan was never completed. The Linha de Guimarães also never got beyond Fafe station . All traffic was stopped on March 24, 2009.

history

The first section of the Linha do Tâmega was put into operation on March 21, 1909 between Livração – Caldas de Canaveses and Amarante. On November 22, 1926, further sections were opened between Amarante and Apeadeiro de Chapa, on March 20, 1932 to Celorico de Basto, and finally on January 15, 1949 to Arco de Baúlhe . Between Amarante and Arco de Baúlhe, operations ceased on January 1, 1990.

The Linha do Tâmega was one of the most difficult routes in Portugal in terms of routing, and it took 40 years to get from Livração to Arco de Baúlhe . It was the last rail line to be completed in this area of ​​northern Portugal and one of the first to be shut down. In total, the entire route was only operated for 51 years. This means that Linha do Tâmega holds the record for the shortest operating time on a route operated by the state railways Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (CP).

An English company had proposed to revive the line from Amarante to Arco de Baúlhe , which had been closed since 1990 . An ambitious plan was presented, but it was rejected. He planned to reactivate the route not only for tourism, but also for local transport.

On March 24, 2009, the infrastructure operator REFER “temporarily” stopped traffic on the route, citing safety deficiencies as the reason. The route has now been completely dismantled, and a cycle path has been built on the route between Amarante and Arco de Baúlhe. In the old train station of Arco de Baúlhe there is a railway museum.
