The Tâmega (Spanish and Galician Támega ) is an approximately 145 km long right or northern tributary of the Douro in northern Portugal and northwestern Spain.
It rises at an altitude of 960 m in the Sierra de San Mamede north of the city of Verín in the Spanish province of Ourense , Galicia . After about 40 km on his way south he reaches the Portuguese Região Norte . In the border area between Verín and Chaves, the Tâmega flows through the fertile Veiga valley . Further downstream, it breaks through a mountain range. The river is not navigable on this section. After flowing through the city of Amarante , it flows into the Douro at Entre-os-Rios ( German "between the rivers" ) east of Porto .
The tâmega is more of a historical than an economic importance. Its valley regularly served as a passage route for foreign invading armies on their way south to rich Portugal. Today it is considered a heavily polluted river due to the gravel and sand mining works on its banks. With river straightening, flooding has also become a major problem.
The Tâmega is dammed by the Torrão dam a little upstream of the confluence with the Douro to form a reservoir.
