Gatão is a place and a former municipality in northern Portugal

Gatão belongs to the Amarante district in the Porto district . The municipality had an area of ​​6 km² and has 1587 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Gatão, Madalena , Cepelos and Amarante (São Gonçalo) were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos e Gatão .

The place Gatão gives its name to the wine of the same name, as the grapes originally came from this place.
