São Gonçalo belongs to the city and county of Amarante in the district of Porto . The community had an area of ​​4 km² and 6610 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena , Cepelos and Gatão were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Amarante (São Gonçalo), Madalena, Cepelos e Gatão . Amarante (São Gonçalo) is the seat of this newly formed community.
