Vicariate Apostolic Galápagos

The Apostolic Vicariate of Galápagos was established on May 6, 1950 as an Apostolic Prefecture and on July 15, 2008 it was raised to the status of a Vicariate . It comprises the Galápagos Islands , the province of the same name, Galápagos, which consists of 13 large, 17 small and 47 smallest islands in the Pacific Ocean and is located approx. 1000 km west of the Ecuadorian mainland area.

The seat of the administration and the ecclesiastical authorities is on the island of San Cristobal, where the Vicar Apostolic (Episcopal Office) also has his residence. There are around 16,000 Catholics. The total of 10 parishes are looked after by 9 diocesan priests. There are 6 seminarians and only one lay brother, but 15 religious sisters .
