Manuel Valarezo Luzuriaga

Manuel Antonio Valarezo Luzuriaga OFM (born June 7, 1937 in the rural parish Malvas of the canton of Zaruma , province of Loja ) is an Ecuadorian Roman Catholic clergyman and emeritus Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate Galápagos in Ecuador .

Life

Manuel Antonio Valarezo Luzuriaga was ordained a priest on August 11, 1962 . He studied communication science and held various positions in pastoral care and administration: for two mandates he was provincial minister of the Friars Minor , and visitator general in Venezuela and Peru. On June 22, 1990 he was appointed Prefect Apostolic of Galápagos.

On April 22, 1996, Valarezo Luzuriaga was appointed titular bishop of Quaestoriana by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on June 23, 1996 by the then Apostolic Nuncio of Ecuador, Archbishop Francesco Canalini . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Portoviejo , José Mario Ruiz Navas , and the Bishop of Ibarra , Antonio Arregui Yarza .

With the elevation of the prefecture to the Vicariate on July 15, 2008, he became Apostolic Vicar.

On October 29, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
