Antonio Arregui
Antonio Arregui Yarza (born June 3, 1939 in Oñate near Burgos , Spain ) is a Spanish Roman Catholic clergyman and retired Archbishop of Guayaquil .
Life
Antonio Arregui Yarza joined Opus Dei in 1957 and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Studium Generale des Opus Dei in Spain. He was then in law at the Opus Dei-run University of Navarra (completion in 1964) and in canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) PhD . He received the sacrament of ordination on March 13, 1964 for Opus Dei. He then worked in pastoral care in Ecuador and built up Opus Dei there. In 1986 he received the Ecuadorian nationality.
Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Auzegera and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Quito in 1990 . He received his episcopal consecration on February 22, 1990, the then Archbishop of Quito and later Cardinal Antonio González Zumárraga ; Co- consecrators were Juan Ignacio Larrea Holguín , Archbishop of Guayaquil and military bishop in Ecuador, and José Mario Ruiz Navas , Bishop of Portoviejo .
On July 25, 1995 he was appointed Bishop of Ibarra . Between 2001 and 2002 he was also the Apostolic Administrator of Tulcán . On May 7, 2003, he was appointed Archbishop of Guayaquil.
Between 1993 and 1999 Antonio Arregui was the general secretary of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference (CEE). In 1999 he was elected Vice President. From 2008 to 2014 he was President of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference.
He received death threats for his critical comments on the planned new constitution in Ecuador in 2008.
Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on September 24, 2015.
