The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portoviejo ( Latin Archidioecesis Portus Veteris , Spanish Arquidiócesis de Portoviejo ) is an in Ecuador located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Porto Viejo .

history

In the 16th century a church was built in the area of ​​the present diocese. The area initially belonged to the diocese of Quito , which was founded a few years later , before it was annexed to the new diocese of Cuenca in 1763 and again to the diocese of Guayaquil in 1838 .

The diocese Portoviejo was on March 23, 1870 by Pope Pius IX. built from cessions of territory by the Archdiocese of Quito and the Diocese of Guayaquil. It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Quito as a suffragan . The Diocese of Portoviejo gave up on December 14, 1945 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Esmeraldas . On January 22, 1956, the Diocese of Portoviejo was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Guayaquil as a suffragan.

On February 25, 1994, the diocese of Portoviejo was raised to an archbishopric by Pope John Paul II .
