The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cuenca ( Latin Archidioecesis Conchensis in Aequatore , Spanish Arquidiócesis de Cuenca ) is in Ecuador located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Cuenca .

history

The Archdiocese of Cuenca was on July 1, 1786 by Pope Pius VI. Established from the cession of territory by the Diocese of Quito as the Diocese of Cuenca and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lima as a suffragan . The diocese of Cuenca gave on May 28, 1803 parts of its territory to establish the diocese of Maynas . On January 13, 1848, the diocese of Cuenca was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Quito as a suffragan. The diocese of Cuenca gave up on December 29, 1862 parts of its territory to establish the dioceses of Loja and Bolívar .

On April 9, 1957, the diocese of Cuenca was by Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Quasi mater raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Cuenca gave up on June 26, 1968 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Azogues .
