Ulrich Bernardi (* 1925 in Ortisei ; † June 2016 ) was a South Tyrolean carver from Val Gardena , who became known for his nativity scenes, the “Bernardi nativity scene” named after him.

Life

His talent for carving was recognized early on by Bernardi's grandfather, who himself was an altar builder. He was also strongly influenced by the work of his grandmother, who was a carver of wooden ornaments. After elementary school, Bernardi attended the drawing school in Ortisei, where he developed his talent in drawing, modeling and carving for three years with Raimund Mureda and Ludwig Moroder . Then he went to the workshop of a master, where he first came into contact with nativity scene carving. Although his master advised him to start his own business after two years, Bernardi stayed with him for two more years to improve his skills as a sculptor.

During the Second World War, the devout Bernardi carved Madonnas and crucifixes for his comrades. His ability as a carver also helped him through the time of his captivity.

Back at home, Bernardi opened his own workshop. Soon afterwards, Bernardi was carving model figures for the wood carving company ANRI in Selva. His works in timeless European style have been awarded many prizes at exhibitions all over Europe. The representation of the nativity scenes in the style of European folk art is characteristic of his art . Bernardi's figures stand out for their simplicity and their lovable facial expressions. He received great support from his wife, the daughter of the artist Giulio Sestini, who was also a wood carver.

Works

  • In 1962 the master carver made the first figures of his Bernardi nativity scene. Every year he added a new sycamore figure to this nativity scene. In 2010 it comprised 99 figures.
  • Ulrich Bernardi also made figures based on motifs by Sarah Kay .
  • His masterpiece is a nativity scene framed with an arch, adorned with a host of countless angel heads barely the size of a thumbnail.
  • The Florentine Nativity scene presented to Pope John Paul II in 1986. In 2004 a new edition made of linden wood came out, which belongs to the series "Back to the Roots".
