Luis Alberto Luna Tobar

Luis Alberto Luna Tobar OCD (born December 15, 1923 in Quito ; † February 7, 2017 there ) was an Ecuadorian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cuenca .

Life

Luis Alberto Luna Tobar joined the Order of the Discalced Carmelites and was ordained a priest on June 23, 1946 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 17, 1977 auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Quito and titular bishop of Mulli . The Archbishop of Quito, Cardinal Pablo Muñoz Vega SJ , ordained him episcopal on September 18 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Antonio José González Zumárraga , auxiliary bishop in Quito, and José Gabriel Díaz Cueva , bishop of Azogues .

On March 6, 1981, he was appointed Archbishop of Cuenca by Pope John Paul II . While his two predecessors pursued a more conservative policy in favor of the upper class, Luna became known as the "red bishop" due to his proximity to liberation theology and his commitment to the poor.

On February 15, 2000, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Luis Alberto Luna Tobar died of severe heart failure in February 2017 . The funeral in the Cathedral of Cuenca took place on February 10, 2017.
