Life

Manuel María Pólit studied in his hometown Quito and in Nantes. From 1883 he was professor of French literature and language at the University of Quito. In 1888 he joined the Ecuadorian Senate and was elected as a member of parliament for the Pichincha district. In 1890 he traveled to Italy and attended a seminary, where he found his subsequent calling. On December 22, 1894, he was finally ordained a priest . Within the Archdiocese of Quito he stood for a modern, conciliar movement.

Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Cuenca on January 12, 1907 . He was ordained bishop on November 1st of the same year by Cardinal Secretary of State Rafael Merry del Val . Co- consecrators were Curia Bishop Pietro Gasparri , later also Cardinal Secretary of State, and Rinaldo Camillo Rousset , Bishop of Bagnoregio . Due to the political situation, Pólit was only able to take over the management of the diocese from 1912. He quickly became known through his pastoral commitment and compensatory policy.

On June 7, 1918, Pope Benedict XV appointed him . to the Archbishop of Quito. With this appointment, his political influence grew, he publicly supported conservative movements, especially Jacinto Jijón Caamaño . Overall, his positions were not clear: Although politically rather conservative, Archbishop Pólit was open to church issues and tried to implement the social encyclical Rerum Novarum of 1891. He was also considered generous in dealing with the poor, although he was very cool and reserved when communicating with the faithful. Manuel María Pólit died of a heart attack on October 28, 1932, at the age of 70.
