history

The diocese of Guayaquil was established on January 29, 1838 from cessions of territory from the diocese of Quito and subordinated to this as a suffragan . On January 22, 1956, the diocese of Guayaquil was by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric. The archbishopric gave up several times in its history parts of its territory to establish new dioceses.
