Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera OFM (born October 11, 1955 in Azogues , Ecuador ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Guayaquil .

Life

Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera came in 1975 in the Congregation of the Franciscan and received on 3 September 1983, the sacrament of Holy Orders . From 1985 to 1990 he served his order as novice master before traveling to Rome for study purposes. Upon his return in 1995, Cabrera became Secretary of the Department of Education within the Ecuadorian Order. In 1996 he also became the Provincial of the Ecuadorian Franciscans, which he remained until 2003.

On April 20, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Archbishop of Cuenca . The Apostolic Nuncio in Ecuador , Archbishop Giacomo Guido Ottonello , donated him episcopal ordination on July 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Guayaquil , Antonio Arregui , and the Archbishop of Quito , Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga . He was best known in 2012 through a controversy with Ecuador's President Rafael Correa when he criticized the removal of religious images from a hospital. From 2001 to 2014 he was Vice President of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference.

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Guayaquil on September 24, 2015 .
