Roland Ekström (born May 22, 1956 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish - Swiss chess and backgammon player .

chess

In 1972 he was Swedish junior champion in Skellefteå . In 1980 he won the Swedish rapid championship in Stockholm . At the Rilton Cup in Stockholm, he finished second in 1981/82. In 1987 he won the traditional Banja Luka tournament, which was held irregularly and shared with Krunoslav Hulak .

Ekström has won the Swiss individual championship four times : 1988 in Silvaplana , 1999 in Grächen , 2001 in Scuol and 2008 in Samnaun . In 2008 he also won the Swiss Rapid Chess Championship.

With the Swedish national team he took part in the Nordic Chess Cup 1975 and the European Team Championship in 1989. After living in Basel for a long time, Ekström has been playing for Switzerland since July 1993. He played with the Swiss national team at the European team championships in 2001, 2007 and 2009 (with grandmaster norm), at the Mitropa Cups in 1995, 1997, 2000, 2006, 2009 and 2013, the 1997 team championship and at the 1996 , 1998 and 2002 Chess Olympiads and 2010 .

He played club chess in Sweden until the 1999/2000 season , for SK Rockaden Stockholm . With Stockholm he won the Swedish team championship nine times: 1979/80 , 1981/82 , 1983/84 , 1991/92 , 1992/93 , 1993/94 , 1995/96 , 1996/97 and 1997/98 . He also took part in the European Club Cup seven times with Rockaden Stockholm between 1982 and 1998 and reached the semi-finals in 1986. He won the Swiss 1st Bundesliga several times with SV Birsfelden / Beider Basel , in the 1999 , 2005 , 2006 , 2006/07 and 2007/08 seasons . In the early 2000s he had also played for SC Lyss-Seeland . In the Swiss National League A , he played for SG Riehen in the 2000 and 2001 seasons , in 2003 for Lugano and since then again for Riehen . Since 2013 he has been playing there for the Réti Zurich chess club , with which he was champion in 2013 and 2014 . In Germany he plays for SC Brombach and has also played in French leagues.

He has held the title of International Master since 1982 . In August 2019 he is in 14th place in the Swiss Elo ranking.

backgammon

In backgammon he became Swiss champion in 1998, 2000 and 2005. In the current Swiss ranking (as of April 15, 2009), it is in second place with a rating of 1758 and in the 7th best rating with 39.5 points in 39th place.

poker

In poker he took third place in Limit Hold'em Freezout in January 2008 at a Winter Fun tournament in Nova Gorica .
