The Roman Catholic Church in Ecuador is part of the Roman Catholic Church worldwide .

history

The Iglesia de Balbanera in Colta , consecrated in 1534, is the oldest church in the country. In 1546 the diocese of Quito was founded, which belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Lima. In 1786 the diocese of Cuenca was founded .

organization

The Roman Catholic Church in Ecuador is divided into four church provinces with 11 associated suffragan dioceses . There are also eight apostolic vicariats and the military ordinariate. 90% of Ecuadorians are Catholics.

The association of the Catholic bishops is the Conferencia Episcopal Ecuatoriana (CEE), the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference . Archbishop Fausto Gabriel Trávez Trávez of Quito has been chairman of the CEE since 2014 . Apostolic Nuncio has been Archbishop Andrés Carrascosa Coso since June 2017 .

The largest diocese, Guayaquil, has 3,000,000 Catholics. It is followed by the Archdiocese of Quito with 1,893,000 and the Archdiocese of Portoviejo with 1,091,000 Catholics. Today, 14,379,000 Catholics live in Ecuador, i.e. 86% of the population (as of December 31, 2016). The 25 dioceses are divided into 1,290 parishes, in which 1,288 diocesan priests, 741 religious priests and 4,652 religious sisters live (as of December 31, 2016).
