The Diocese of Ibarra ( lat. : Dioecesis Ibarrensis , span. : Diócesis de Ibarra ) is an in Ecuador located Roman Catholic diocese based in Ibarra . It includes the Imbabura province .

history

Pope Pius IX founded the diocese of Ibarra on December 29, 1862 from cessions of territory from the archdiocese of Quito , to which it was also subordinated as a suffragan .

The cathedral was destroyed by an earthquake in 1868 and rebuilt in 1872. On March 17, 1965, it lost part of its territory to the Diocese of Tulcán .
