Wigberto Tañada

Wigberto "Bobby" Ebarle Tañada (born August 13, 1934 ) is a Filipino lawyer , university professor and politician .

biography

The son of Lorenzo Martinez Tañada , who was also a senator from November 1947 to September 1972, studied at the Ateneo de Manila University after attending elementary school and high school , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1956 . He then completed a postgraduate degree in law at Manuel L. Quezon University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and also obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the Law School of Harvard University in 1962 .

After his return to the Philippines, he was even appointed professor of law at the Manuel L. Quezon University in 1964 and taught there until 1969. He then became a lawyer and since 1970 partner of the law firm of Tanada, Vivo & Tan Law Offices . In addition, in 1978 he became a member of the Bar Examiner .

After the fall of the government of President Ferdinand Marcos in February 1986, he was on 7 March 1986 by his successor Corazon Aquino as head of the customs authority ( Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs ) appointed and held this position exactly one year until March 7, 1987 out. He was also a member of the Judicial Bar Council from 1987 to 1991 .

After his election, he became a member of the Senate for the first time on July 1, 1987, and was a member of it until June 30, 1995. During this time between 1992 and 1995 he was also a minority floor leader and thus leader of the opposition in the Senate. On June 2, 1993, he succeeded Jovito Salonga as chairman of the traditional Liberal Party . On October 17, 1994, Raul Daza , Speaker of the House of Representatives Pro tempore , succeeded him in this office. He himself was then from 1994 to 1998 Vice President of the Liberal Party for Southern Tagalog .

After leaving the Senate, he became a member of the House of Representatives on July 1, 1995, and has since represented the 4th electoral district of Quezon Province . At the same time, he not only became chairman of the Philippine ASEAN working group on human rights in 1999 , but was also president of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) from 2007 to 2009 .

On June 30, 2001, he resigned as a member of the House of Representatives. On July 1, 2004, his son Lorenzo "Erin" Reyes Tañada became MP for the 4th constituency of Quezon.
