Lorenzo Martinez Tañada (born August 10, 1898 in Gumaca , Quezon , † May 28, 1992 in Manila ) was a Filipino politician and longtime senator , who was best known for his opposition to US influence in the Philippines.

Life

After attending school, Tañada studied law at the University of the Philippines and the Law School of Harvard University and then worked as a lawyer before he was Solicitor General of the Philippines between 1945 and 1947 .

He was first elected to the Senate in November 1947 and was a member of the Senate until its dissolution after the imposition of martial law by the dictatorial ruling President Ferdinand Marcos on September 21, 1972. He was the longest senior member in the history of the Senate.

He became particularly well known as the organizer of the alliance of opponents of the US military bases and other groups to organize public resistance to the presence of US forces in the Philippines. In September 1991, the award was given after the Senate rejected an extension of the service life of the last US military station, US Naval Base Subic Bay .

His son Wigberto Tañada was also a senator and a member of the House of Representatives , while his grandson Erin Tañada is a member of the House of Representatives.
