The Imbabura Province is a province in Ecuador . It is named after the Imbabura volcano and has about 350,000 inhabitants on an area of 4896 km² . Their capital is Ibarra .

geography

The Imbabura Province is located in the northern Andean region of Ecuador. The province borders in the north on the provinces Esmeraldas and Carchi , in the east on the provinces Sucumbíos and Napo , in the south on the province Pichincha and in the west again on Esmeraldas.

The province is also known as the “lake province” or “the blue province” because over 400 lakes are part of its natural heritage. The best known are the Lago San Pablo , located at the foot of the Imbabura volcano , near the Peguche waterfall, and the crater lake Laguna de Cuicocha .

In addition to the Imbabura (4610 m), the volcanoes Cotacachi (4944 m) and Yanahurco de Piñán (4535 m) are the highest mountains in the province.

The Panamericana crosses the province from north to south.

population

The province's population consists largely of Quichua - indigenous people and mestizos . In the Chota Valley (Spanish: Valle del Chota ) on the border with the province of Carchi there are numerous settlements that are inhabited by Afro-Ecuadorians .

In particular, the indigenous population of the Otavalo area is known worldwide for their handicraft weaving. The leather handicrafts from Cotacachi and the wood carvings from San Antonio de Ibarra also have a good reputation.
