Auki Kanaima Tituaña Males (born January 2, 1965 in Cotacachi , Imbabura ) is an Ecuadorian business economist and politician with an ethnic Kichwa background. From 1996 to 2009 he was mayor of the city of Cotacachi.

Life

Auki Tituaña was one of the founders of the party-like indigenous movement Pachakutik . In 1996 he was elected mayor of the city of Cotacachi , making him the first indigenous mayor of a city in the history of Ecuador. He was later confirmed twice in elections, so that he held the office for 13 years.

During his reign in Cotacachi, Auki Tituaña introduced a so-called cantonal unit assembly (Asamblea de Unidad Cantonal AUC) with approx. 700 members to involve the population, which was understood to be “direct democratic” and which met annually to achieve a balance of interests between various interest groups the composition of which could be changed annually. One of the main tasks of the AUC was negotiating the municipal budget. Support for these democratization approaches was also provided by German development aid, such as the Society for Technical Cooperation , the German Development Service and the Center for International Migration and Development .

With the help of the AUC, the share of investments in rural areas in the municipal budget rose to 70%, while the supply of water and electricity rose from almost 50% to 90% and the share of illiterate people fell to below 5%. For this, the canton of Cotacachi received the Dubai Prize in 2000 and the “ Cities for Peace ” prize from the United Nations in 2002 .

In the local elections on April 26, 2009, Auki Tituaña was beaten by the PAIS candidate , the former National Director of Intercultural Bilingual Education , Kichwa Alberto Anrango .

In 2011 Auki Tituaña ran for the office of chairman of the indigenous umbrella organization CONAIE . On the night of April 2nd to 3rd, he was defeated by the former ECUARUNARI chairman Humberto Cholango . This came to 472 votes from 1050 delegates and was ahead of Auki Tituaña (353 votes) and Shuar Pepe Acacho (205 votes).
