Alberto Anrango

Luis Alberto Bonilla Anrango (* 31 March 1947 in Cotacachi , Imbabura ) is an Ecuadorian Kichwa - teachers and politicians with ethnic Kichwa -Background. He has been the mayor of the city of Cotacachi since 2009.

In 1977 Alberto Anrango took part in the founding of the farmers and indigenous people of Cotacachi (Unión de Organizaciones Campesinas Indígenas de Cotacachi UNORCAC) and became the first indigenous councilor in Cotacachi in the first local elections after the democratization of Ecuador in 1979.

Alberto Anrango was the first head of the National Directorate for Intercultural Bilingual Education (Dirección Nacional de Educación Intercultural Bilingüe, DINEIB) at the Ministry of Education of Ecuador and then human rights officer for the indigenous area .

In the local elections on April 26, 2009, he won the long-time mayor Auki Tituaña of the indigenous party Pachakutik as a candidate for Rafael Correa's PAIS party .

In his own words, Alberto Anrango wanted to focus on protecting the environment and using traditional medicine. However, his position on copper mining in Junín in the subtropical Intag Valley is not clear. There has been no radical change in policy, so the cantonal unit assembly (Asamblea de Unidad Cantonal AUC) introduced by his predecessor continues to work under Alberto Anrango.

Alberto Anrango is married to Mercedes María Chico, with whom he has three children.
