Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is a province of the Republic of Ecuador . Its capital is Santo Domingo de los Colorados . The province has about 323,000 inhabitants (2007). It is named after the capital and the indigenous people of the Tsáchila , who are also called Colorados in Spanish .

geography

The province is located at the transition between the western slopes of the Andes and the coastal region of Ecuador in the central northwest of Ecuador. The vegetation is determined by tropical rainforests and former tropical rainforest areas that are now used for cattle breeding, as banana or oil palm plantations.

It borders in the north and east on the province of Pichincha , in the northwest on Esmeraldas , in the west on Manabí , in the south on Los Ríos and in the southeast on the province Cotopaxi .

history

The province was established by a law passed on October 2, 2007 and published in the Law Gazette on October 6, 2007. It consists of the canton of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, which previously belonged to the province of Pichincha . The boundaries are not yet fully established as the area around the La Concordia settlement is claimed by Santo Domingo and the Esmeraldas province. According to the Provincialization Act, a referendum convened by the president should decide on the territory to which it belongs. At the beginning of November 2007, La Concordia was named the canton of the Esmeraldas province in a controversial decision by the National Congress.

The canton of Santo Domingo de los Colorados was established in 1967 as the westernmost canton of the Pichincha province.

politics

The province is currently administered by an interinstitutional transitional commission made up of the mayor of the capital, the president-appointed governor of the province, the governor of Tsáchila and the prefect of the Pichincha province or their representatives. On March 16, 2008, a prefect and the provincial parliament were elected. The election as prefect won Édgar Benítez from PAÍS , the party of the Ecuadorian president. Mayor of the capital is Kléber Paz y Miño from the Partido Social Cristiano .
