Santa Elena is a province of the Republic of Ecuador established on November 7, 2007 . It consists of three formerly the province of Guayas belonging cantons Santa Elena, Salinas and La Libertad. The new province has an oil refinery, an airport, a port and extensive tourist infrastructure, especially in the seaside resort of Salinas.

geography

The province of Santa Elena is located in the far west of Ecuador, centrally located in north-south direction, on the Santa Elena Peninsula , which protrudes from the Ecuadorian mainland into the Pacific Ocean and is climatically a continuation of the coastal desert in northwestern Peru. The climate is accordingly predominantly dry and hot.

The province borders in the south on the Gulf of Guayaquil , in the west on the open Pacific, in the north on the province of Manabí and in the east on the "mother province" Guayas.

politics

On March 1, 2007, President Correa signed a bill that merged the cantons of La Libertad, Santa Elena and Salinas into a new province of Santa Elena. The Prefect of Guayas, the Mayor of Guayaquils and large parts of the Provincial Council were against the spin-off of the new province, which was ratified by the National Congress on November 7, 2007 after long negotiations and sometimes violent strikes in the affected cantons . Until the election of a prefect, the province of Santa Elena was administered by a government committee made up of representatives of the cantons and the governor Ana Treviño appointed by the president. In elections on March 16, 2008, a prefect and the provincial parliament were elected. The previous governor Ana Treviño won the elections for the prefecture for Movimiento PAÍS . Gino González was named as her successor in the governorship in May.
