The province of Galápagos has officially been an Ecuadorian province since 1973 with the capital Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal . The province consists of the archipelago of the Galápagos Islands and like this has a land area of about 8000 km². Steps had already been taken in 1861 and 1957 to make Galápagos a province, but these were not sustainable.
politics
The current prefect is Fanny Uribe, who was elected for a center-left party alliance. Mayor of the capital Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is Pedro Anibal Zapata from the Partido Social Cristiano . Alfredo Torres, who lost in the 2004 prefect election, has held the post of governor of the province since September 2008.
Administrative division
The province of Galápagos is administratively divided into three cantons , which are further subdivided into eight parroquias . The parroquias are further divided into recintos .

After the census of 2010, the Galápagos Province had 25,124 inhabitants, which is as follows for the three cantons or eight Parroquias distribute:
- Cantón San Cristóbal: 7,475 inhabitants
- Parroquia Puerto Baquerizo Moreno : 6672 inhabitants
- Parroquia El Progresso : 658 inhabitants
- Parroquia Isla Santa María : 145 inhabitants
