Afro-Ecuadorians

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Afro- Ecuadorians (Spanish: Afroecuatorianos) are an ethnic group in Ecuador . They are descended from enslaved Africans who were brought there by the Spanish during the colonization of Ecuador. They make up around 4% of the Ecuadorian population.

history

Most Afro-Ecuadorians are descendants of enslaved Africans who came to Ecuador in the early 16th century . Many Afro-Ecuadorians fleeing slavery migrated to Esmeraldas , where they built settlements and partly mixed with the indigenous population . The descendants from these compounds are also known as Zambo . Later they increasingly settled in other areas of Ecuador, but the majority still live in Esmeraldas.

Discrimination

Even though slavery was abolished in 1851 , Afro-Ecuadorians continued to face severe discrimination . Most of them live in poverty .

To combat these problems there are development projects and human rights organizations that focus on Afro-Ecuadorians.
