The diocese of Santo Domingo en Ecuador ( Latin Dioecesis Sancti Dominici in Aequatoria ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in Ecuador with its seat in Santo Domingo de los Colorados . The diocese includes the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas and adjacent areas.

history

The diocese was detached from the Archdiocese of Quito on January 5, 1987 by Archbishop Antonio González Zumárraga and initially run as a territorial prelature . The first bishop was Emil Stehle ("Emilio Lorenzo Stehle") of German descent. In 1996 Pope John Paul II raised the prelature to the diocese of Santo Domingo de los Colorados (Latin: Dioecesis Coloratensis ). On June 18, 2008 it was renamed Santo Domingo en Ecuador .
