history

The Apostolic Vicariate Napo was on February 7, 1871 by Pope Pius IX. built from cessions of territory by the Archdiocese of Quito . On October 4, 1886, the Vicariate Apostolic Napo gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture Canelos e Macas . Further assignments of territory took place on February 17, 1893 to establish the Apostolic Vicariates Méndez y Gualaquiza and Zamora . The Apostolic Vicariate Napo gave on April 16, 1924 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of San Miguel de Sucumbíos . Another assignment of territory took place on November 16, 1953 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Aguarico .
