José Mario Ruiz Navas

José Mario Ruiz Navas (born July 20, 1930 in Pujilí , Cotopaxi Province , † December 10, 2020 in Latacunga , Cotopaxi Province) was an Ecuadorian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Portoviejo . From 1993 to 2002 he was President of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference .

Life

José Mario Ruiz Navas was ordained a priest on April 17, 1954 in Rome . He completed his philosophy studies at the advanced seminar in San José in Quito and his studies in theology, canon law and social sciences at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. On his return from Rome in 1959, the Bishops' Conference entrusted him with the organization of the General Secretariat under the direction of Cardinal Bernardino Echeverría Ruiz , then Bishop of Ambato. For nine years he promoted the secular apostolate as an advisor to Catholic action and the Christian family movement in the country.

He accompanied Cardinal Carlos María de la Torre as secretary to the conclave, in which Pope John XXIII. was elected, as well as for all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 5, 1968 Bishop of Latacunga . The Apostolic Nuncio in Ecuador, Archbishop Giovanni Ferrofino , donated him episcopal ordination on January 12, 1969 ; Co- consecrators were Pablo Muñoz Vega SJ , Archbishop of Quito , and Bernardino Carlos Guillermo Honorato Echeverría Ruiz, OFM , Bishop of Ambato .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Portoviejo on August 6, 1989. The Pope later elevated the bishopric to an archbishopric and thus became the first archbishop of Portoviejo. On August 6, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

José Mario Ruiz Navas was active in various commissions of the Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference, of which he was president from 1993 to 2002.

He was known for his support of the poorest and youth through the creation of craft centers and medical pharmacies as well as environmental hygiene programs and the formation of 110 groups to promote women. He initiated the creation of Radio Católica de Manabí and the San Pedro seminary. He also worked as a columnist for the El Universo newspaper .

Ruiz Navas died as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
